Big news today, Prince Harry made a racist remark about a fellow soldier and the expected criticism has begun to flow. Although he's issued an apology, this has not been enough to stem the flow of invective. In his video diary, he called the soldier a Paki. Hearing the comment which is mysteriously in the public domain now, the tone of the comment sounded more friendly than insulting.
A couple of points here. This is a video diary. Notice how the facts are compacted and actually made to sound like a criticism by the media:
The newspaper said the prince, who is third in line to the throne, had called the soldier "our little Paki friend".
Now, he did use the word 'friend', but this has been ignored. Also, it is a fucking diary. Does this mean that we have to edit a personal diary to conform with what is regarded as being politically correct?
What has being 'third in line for the throne' mean? He may become a king (unlikely, if his genetic heritage is checked) and therefore shouldn't be using language that his grandfather could be proud of. And he has APOLOGISED!
'Politicians and Muslim groups are among those to have condemned the prince's remarks' is another remark from the media. Well, that says it all. It's not really difficult to insult a Muslim, and polititians do, so much, want to be seen to be on the right side of political correctness.
My mother used to tell me to go to the Pakis and buy some milk or whatever. How it came up I don't know, but I remember a heated discussion with Kalyan from Calcutta who said my mother was a racist. We ended up at each other's throats and had to be separated. So I threw him out of the house. In retrospect, my mother, who was born in 1917, may have been using what is considered today to be racist language, but she was anything but a racist. She had great sympathy with anyone who was in the minority in Scotland. Let's through political correctness in the bin where it belongs. After all, words cannot and must not be narrowly interpreted to fit into an ideal.
My god, whoever he, she or it is, there's a war going on. And there are opinions about that.
