THE ENTRANCE TO THE GARDENS
BEING ROASTED ON A FURNACE AND DISEMBOWELED
Went
to the Haw Par Villa or Tiger Balm Gardens today. It was built by the Aw family; Aw Boon Haw
and Aw Boon Par who were brothers who wanted to promote Tiger Balm products
produced by the family business. They
were originally from Myanmar but moved the business to Singapore.
LOVELY UNDERPANTS
To
enter into the garden is to see the most bizarre sculptures depicting scenes
from Chinese folklore and history. They
are presented as dioramas telling the stories related to Confucianism.
YES, SHE'S HERE TOO
The
most frightening is a cave-like structure showing the Ten Courts of Hell with
horrible depictions of the punishments meted out to those who harm others,
steal, disrespect their parents, dodge taxes and most peculiarly, cheat at
exams. There are also scenes which
resemble still lives of some kind of drama.
Highly
recommended, don’t miss out on this unique
and amazing garden, from top to bottom a cascade of surreal interpretations
from Confucian folklore.
One thing I do remember about Tiger Balm, treat it with care. You don't want to get any of the stuff in your eyes or on any other sensitive appendages.
Here is Fulmaya after I'd lost her in the maze of exhibits. Looking a bit tired and not the least worried about the leaping tiger behind her.
