More confusing than ever this year. I don't know how many plays, exhibitions, dance performances and especially comedy acts there are, but enough to fill a thick catalogue of events that are taking place in Edinburgh this year.
When I first came to to the festival, must have been forty-years ago, the fringe was small compared to what it has become. Any show cost 10 shillings (50 pence) and there was a lot of experimental acts that lasted the whole night. Now it's around £12 a ticket for a 1-hour show...so time have changed.
Edinburgh during the festival is where I learned about Lebanese gold and how to roll a joint. Standing with the hippies with earrings in their ears pretending to play a guitar while people passed by and threw money was fun. Now there is a feeling that the festival is for foreigners and there seem to be fewer and fewer locals as the years go by.
Old favourites like Puppetry of the Penis, Liz Lochhead at the Assembly Rooms, The Oxford Review, etc. are still there. But there are a lot of new acts of course which I couldn't begin to list. The real problem is looking at the website or the catalogue for shows, times and prices. Now my daughter has given me an app which, when I open it, tells me which shows are nearby, when they start and how much they cost along with a review. How good is that? There's no excuse now not to wander into town and plunge into a show I've never heard of and...well, and spend some money. What was my budget again?
